It is uncommon for Test-playing nations to visit associate teams. But whenever they do, they always face a fierce battle. The recent two-T20I tour of Ireland by India has provided a fantastic opportunity for both the Indian and Irish teams. Let’s take a closer look at a few crucial elements from the series that need to be considered going forward.

Show Stealer: Deepak Hooda

What a series this has been for Hooda. He has banged on the door of the selectors repeatedly to get a spot in the T20 World Cup in 2022. Deepak started the opening innings in the first game because Ruturaj was injured. The right-hander seized the chance with both hands, scoring 47 to lead India to victory. Deepak will remember this tour because it was his first T20I century in the second game. His performances must have impressed selectors such that they would consider providing him a ticket to Australia.

Sanju Samson probably earned the selectors’ trust. Hasn’t he?

Sanju Samson’s absence from the T20I series between India and South Africa was the subject of discussion. Sanju has had a fantastic IPL, but no one is aware of what caused the selectors to release him even though the senior players weren’t on the team. He was chosen by the selectors for the Ireland tour and had the opportunity to perform well in the second T20I. Sanju, who is a sweet-timer of the ball, hit a blistering 77 off just 42 deliveries, convincing the selectors that he would be a strong contender for the T20I World Cup.

The series against India, a missed chance for Paul Stirling

40 off 18 & 4 off 5. That’s all that Ireland’s finest and most successful white ball batsman managed in the series. Whilst Stirling did seem to be in the touch during a quickfire forty, he wasn’t quite able to do the role that his captain would’ve wanted from the senior pro of a very enterprising side.

Umran Malik’s debut was one to remember

Umran Malik was the man that the entire country was waiting to see. The speedster, who had been warming the bench during the South Africa T20I series, made his debut against Ireland. In the first game, Hardik handed him one over. Ireland came close to finishing the chase in the second game, which required 17 runs in the last over. Hardik backed Umran because of his lightning-quick pace and the fact that he didn’t upset the captain. India won by four runs.

Umran should be proud of himself since it is wonderful how he handled himself when playing in his second match, bowling a critical over, and helping the team to victory under pressure. Also, in all these years, India hasn’t had a single bowler who can consistently hit 150.

So the management is going to stick with him for a while and train him with bowlers like Bhuvi, Shami, and Bumrah.

Having said that, the question, for now is, can he get on that plane to Australia?

The youngsters demonstrated, yet again, they can succeed minus star power of a Kohli, Rohit, and Bumrah

For the Ireland tour, the BCCI put their faith in the young players, and they will be happy to watch them play a powerful brand of cricket. The selectors have hinted that there may be two teams touring two separate nations in the future. It demonstrates the power and skill of the Indian players. India produces both the quantity and the quality that is required at an international level.

A squad that recovered from two defeats by South Africa, levelled the series, and then comfortably defeated the Irish, and that too without the main players, demonstrates their calibre and self-confidence.

Strong bench strength is a result of the fact that there are typically more than three candidates for each open position. Therefore, if you want to represent India, you will have to be tough.

Truth be known, senior players will be proud of their team and excited to play together against England. For the first T20I, the BCCI has given the younger team a chance to compete against a strong team like England. From the second T20I, the senior players will join the team.

The players have a fantastic chance to showcase their skills and compete to get on the flight to the T20 World Cup. This will be a test for the bleed blues for the World Cup against a team like England. If they win this time, they will be the strongest and most difficult team to battle against in Australia.
