The ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 was a powerful reminder that no team can rest on their laurels, regardless of their past successes.

It showcased the unpredictability of sports, where even the most seasoned and formidable teams can be taken down by underdogs. It served as a humbling experience for all of us, reinforcing the notion that in the world of cricket, no one is invincible.

In an exhilarating battle for the highly coveted trophy, Australia, despite their initial struggles in the tournament, showed remarkable resilience and rose to the occasion like a phoenix.

Their opponents were none other than the undefeated and almost invincible India. In this nerve-wracking clash, Australia maintained their composure and emerged victorious against the home team.

However, avid supporters surely felt the absence of the West Indies cricket team’s distinctive flair, as they unfortunately did not qualify for this highly anticipated tournament.

Caribbean cricket has experienced its fair share of challenges and setbacks over the years. However, the unwavering dedication and resilience of their fans is truly remarkable. Even in the face of disappointment, they never lose hope.

When their beloved team achieves success and brings home silverware, their love and support overflow with genuine sincerity. Their loyalty is a testament to the profound bond between Caribbean cricket and its passionate fan base.

The 2023 ICC World Cup tournament in India presented a valuable opportunity for the current and future West Indian cricket teams to learn some important lessons.

They should closely analyse the strategies, techniques, and performances of the participating teams to identify areas of improvement. By studying and adapting from the just concluded prestigious event, they can enhance their game and stay competitive on the global stage.

Lessons to be learnt from the IND V AUS Game at Chennai

Let us take a case in point. A few days back, India faced a challenging situation with only two runs on the board and having lost three wickets early on. It was the CWC 2023 campaign opener for hosts India.

However, it was the exceptional display of composure and skill by Kohli and Rahul that turned the tides in India’s favor. They gracefully navigated through the tough phase of unpredictable pitch conditions, ultimately leading India to victory once things settled down. Remember, India were struggling at one stage to chase down even 200, which was no more than 4 an over.

Their determined efforts truly made all the difference in securing a well-deserved win for their team.

There are valuable lessons for young West Indian cricketers to learn here.

One of them is the importance of demonstrating unyielding determination to remain at the crease and patiently waiting for moments to ease down, rather than resorting to impulsive aggressive shots that often result in capitulation. By adopting a resilient mindset and playing strategically, they can avoid unnecessary risks and achieve long-term success on the field.

Seeing the fearlessness of teams like The Netherlands and Afghanistan

While the Netherlands and Afghanistan may not be widely recognised in international cricket, they have proven time and again that they are forces to be reckoned with. When facing off against powerhouse teams, they display incredible resilience and fearlessness on the field.

Their strategic approach to the game coupled with their sensible game play gives even the top teams a run for their money.

It’s important for talented youngsters from Caribbean to understand that talent alone is not enough; it’s how you harness that talent and effectively execute strategies on the cricket field that truly matters for success.

Improving the standard of fielding

The standard of fielding in cricket has made remarkable progress over the years. Now, almost every team boasts dynamic individuals who are like live wires on the field.

These players excel at seizing half chances and making precise throws that hit the wicket, proving invaluable when their team is struggling to take a wicket through bowling alone.

Windies’ players possess a natural athleticism that effortlessly translates into their fielding skills. However, it is crucial for them to harness this innate talent in order to produce optimal results on the field.

By honing their abilities and maximising their potential, they can truly excel and achieve great success in the game.

Understanding the difference between T20I and ODI

The T20 format, known for its fast-paced nature, is all about scoring as many runs as possible in a limited time frame.

On the other hand, ODI takes a more strategic approach where teams aim to strike a balance between scoring runs and preserving wickets.

The aggressive play style is crucial in T20I matches, while ODI offers more room for strategic game play.

It’s important for young West Indian cricketers to broaden their horizons beyond the T20 format and invest in their development for longer formats, such as ODI cricket. And needless to say, Test match cricket where they are currently an eighth ranked team.

Expanding their skills and adapting to different styles of play will not only enhance their overall game but also increase opportunities for success in international cricket.

A harmless note, but one with a message 🙏

They say that turning dreams into reality is no easy feat, but those who truly desire it can make it happen with dedication and hard work.

While it may seem daunting, one must remember that dreams can indeed come true if we are willing to put in the necessary efforts.

It is crucial for West Indies players to recognise the importance of prioritising their nation over financial gains.

No one is delivering a moral lecture, certainly not this website or this article on where one’s priorities must remain and where they mustn’t.

No one is saying a line that says do not play the IPL or CPL or what have you.

But just how convenient is it to simply enjoy the T20 leagues, earn money- not that one should not- but lack abysmally under that famous and widely known maroon shirt?

No fan anywhere in the Caribbean would ever like to see the talented cricketers sit idle and not earn money. Fact.

No talent anywhere in the world, let alone in the Caribbean, deserves to not be paid sufficiently and at the same time, not be given fair chances. Also a fact.

But is that all?

Just imagine all that this team can achieve by simply getting its act together?

Quite frankly, by delivering successful performances on the field, the West Indies team shall not only bring joy to the people of the Caribbean, but to a wider world that still, despite their pathetic inconsistencies, loves them.

By the way, by being successful in national duties, the team members shall strengthen a sense of national pride.

Can West Indies cricket have some of that now, please?

Can these West Indies fans who aren’t only in the Caribbean but elsewhere, get some of that, please?
