Bhilai is a city located in the Durg district of Chhattisgarh, an Indian state in eastern central India, and serves as a significant industrial and educational centre for the region.
The city has produced a test match player named Rajesh Chauhan, who famously secured a victory for India by hitting a six against Pakistan in a thrilling ODI match in Karachi in 1997. This moment inspired young athletes from Bhilai to aspire to represent India on the international stage. While we are still waiting for another player from Bhilai to don the national colours, the recent initiative by Rungta Group of Institutes to establish a cricket academy in association with Govind ChahuhanCricket Academy for young talent is promising for the future of cricket in the steel city.
The South African legend Jonty Rhodes, who transformed fielding standards in cricket, was the guest of honour at the inauguration of the cricket academy and annual function program of the institutes. He generously dedicated his time to the children, much like his commitment on the field. The children established several stalls that highlighted the culture of Chhattisgarh and India, bringing joy not only to the renowned cricketer but also to the people of Bhilai.
Jonty was also accompanied by Chinmay Tiwari, a resident of Raipur, who is recognized for his passion for cricket and has previously brought several international cricketers to Chhattisgarh. Additionally, Chinmaywas part of the Indian Legends management team during the Road Safety Series held in Raipur in March 2021.
At the inauguration of the Rungta Cricket Academy, former Test player Rajesh Chauhan and SRGI Chairman Sanjay Rungta was in attendance. After the inauguration ceremony concluded, Jonty visited the institute and spent time with the children. A couple of hours later, Deputy CM of Chhattisgarh Arun Sao and MLA Vaishali Nagar Bhilai Rikesh Sen also attended the event to bless the children who showcased a vibrant cultural program.
Here are some key points that Rhodes shared with the press and those in attendance who came to catch a glimpse of him.
Children should play all Kinds of Sport
The renowned cricketer emphasized that while cricket is considered a religion in India and there is nothing wrong with that, children should also engage in other sports such as hockey, football, and table tennis. Participating in these activities enhances agility and hand-eye coordination, which are crucial for cricket, and playing various sports also boosts overall fitness levels.
Attributes needed for becoming a great fielder
When Jonty Rhodes was asked about the qualities necessary to become a truly exceptional fielder, he mentioned that agility and anticipation are two crucial aspects for young players to develop. He emphasized that it’s not beneficial to spend countless hours on the field; rather, it’s a mental game where you must feel as if every ball is coming your way, which will enhance your movement.
Appreciated the contribution of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli to Indian Cricket

Jonty Rhodes stated that the era when India ranked last in making exceptional catches during tournaments is over, as the country now excels in fielding alongside batting. He acknowledged that having a strong physique and excellent fitness enables cricketers to perform at their best.
Furthermore, he noted that Dhoni, who initiated this fitness awareness long ago, has been echoed by the emergence of Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, both of whom are impressive athletes and agile movers on the field, contributing to Team India’s success in winning more matches.
Ultimately, he stated that cricket is a team sport where every player must contribute to the team’s victory. While Bumrah may be taking wickets, the batsmen also need to put runs on the scoreboard, and fielders play a crucial role by preventing runs and making excellent catches. He also mimicked MS Dhoni’s batting style, including his helicopter shot, and vividly recalled the six that Dhoni hit in the 2011 World Cup final to secure the prestigious trophy for India. He also expressed high regard for the Rungta group of Institutes for their excellent initiative in providing cricket facilities to the aspiring youth of Bhilai, enabling them to engage in the sport while receiving equally important education.
