Although, the match itself turned out to be one sided affair with India winning it comfortably by 7 wickets, but for the organisers and the broadcasters, it filled there coffers no end. More then 3.5 crore people watched the epic India vs Pakistan clash on Disney + Hotstar, which is a new global streaming viewership record.

The hype for this particular match was so much, that the proper dance and razzmatazz ceremony, that usually precedes the 1st match of the tournament, instead took place before India v Pakistan game. It evoked a strong criticism from the other participating cricket boards but it fell on deaf ears.

The political tension between both the nations means that India Pakistan do not play any bilateral series with each other any more. But are often pitted against each other in a multi event tournament. The rarity means more anticipation and more excitement amongst one and all.

But, has the greatest sporting rivalry justified to its billing ? Well, the outcome of the matches between these 2 cricket cricketing nations over the past few years have often resulted in damp squibs. Pakistan have never beaten India in a 50 over cricket World Cup match.

The political history between these 2 nations, coupled with the fierce encounters they have had across formats in the past, often make India – Pakistan games seem much more then just a cricket match. It’s been a rivalry that is regularly agitated by wars.

No cricket was played between the 2 countries between 1961 and 1978, this time period included 2 major wars in 1965 and 1971. And no India vs Pakistan Test match has been played since the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.

Inspite of all this and with the rarity of cricket played between these 2 countries, the gulf in quality and temperament is apparent whenever the 2 teams have stepped into the field recently. The 8-0 head to head record in ODI world cups adds a remarkable exclamation mark to the fact that Pakistan have struggled to compete against India on big stages.

Irrespective of the one way tunnel kind of results in the last few outings between these two proud cricketing nations, it needs to be said that the historical context, passionate fan base and ability to captivate audiences worldwide make India vs Pakistan rivalry that transcends boundaries and defines the spirit of cricket.
