When the prize money at stake is in millions and the eye balls glued onto the idiot box are in billions, the event in question is undoubtedly an Eden of all T20 tournaments around the globe.

Yes, the IPL is certainly a glittering paradise, with the razzmatazz of commercial gains and the eye candy of entertainment, as it once again bestows its grand presence upon us.

Starting this evening, the finest talent from franchises across all corners of the biggest cricketing giant in the world a.k.a India will once again lock horns for the coveted trophy on offer and all the monies that come with it.

Speaking about talent, the IPL has not only groomed oodles of talent from India but also overseas with everyone eyeing an opportunity to win this unprecedented league.

No wonder the competition is stiff and the cricket on show, remarkable.

When one talks about overseas talent, a country unquestionably worthy of a mention is South Africa, which over the years has seen some of its finest blossom in this T20 league, the likes of Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn and many more.

Well, this year is no different as a host of Protea stars will once again look to shine for their respective franchises and add the much-needed oomph factor to this tournament.

So as the IPL gets underway, let’s look at five Proteas who certainly would want to make this year’s edition their own and justify selection in South Africa’s squad for the T20 World Cup that commences in a few months:

Aiden Markram (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Having been stripped of the leadership role at Sunrisers Hyderabad, this towering talent from Pretoria will have a lot to prove purely as a batter in this year’s edition.

Perhaps, it does come as a surprise that Markram hasn’t retained the captaincy duties for the Hyderabad franchise despite leading their Eastern Cape counterparts to two consecutive victories in the SA20 along with being the national captain of the Protea T20 outfit.

With the captaincy saga now water under the bridge, Aiden would undoubtedly aspire to be the mainstay in the middle order for the Sunrisers with the aggressors in Travis Head and Heinrich Klassen looking to build around him.

Boasting a plethora of runs nearing 4000 in T20’s across the world at a healthy strike rate of 133, Markram would want to further his capability by scoring a mountain of runs in this year’s IPL to further his credentials not only in India but also back home.

Anrich Nortje (Delhi Capitals)

A stress fracture ruled out this quick for the better part of last year including the ODI World Cup, SA 20 and the incoming tours from Australia and India.

Having recently been cleared to play for Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2024 edition, Nortje would have a lot of catching up to do and pile those wickets aplenty with his soaring pace.

Afterall, he faces stiff competition from the young brigade of fast bowlers in South Africa, the likes of Gerald Coetzee and Nandre Burger to stake his claim once again in the Protea setup.

Tristan Stubbs (Delhi Capitals)

Tristan Stubbs has caught the imagination of fans back home with his aggressive might as one of the most reliable batters for the Warriors, his domestic franchise.

His recent triple century in South Africa’s four-day competition is testament to this.

Having not got enough game time for the Mumbai Indians last year, this lanky hitter would want to change this with his move to Delhi Capitals.

Tristan will add the much-needed fire power to the Delhi middle order that already looks top heavy in David Warner, Prithvi Shaw and captain Rishabh Panth.

A bed of runs in IPL 2024 will undoubtedly cement his cause to consistently play for the Proteas as national coach Rob Walter will keep a close eye on him with the T20 World Cup looming.

Gerald Coetzee (Mumbai Indians)

One of the finds for South Africa in the ODI World Cupwith 20 scalps to his name, Gerald Coetzee courtesy his speed and swing certainly has a pacey career in front of him.

Having won his maiden IPL contract with Mumbai Indians, this enigma of fast bowling would undoubtedly want to further his taste for Indian conditions with soaring to wickets aplenty.

The 2023 ODI World Cup was a chance inclusion for this speedster with the injury to Anrich Nortje but come the T20 World Cup, Gerald wouldn’t leave anything to chance and what’s better than proving his mettle at the IPL.

Francois du Plessis (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)

The stalwart of South African cricket and one of their best T20 captains, Francois du Plessis has not shied away from expressing his desire to represent the Proteas in another edition of the T20 World Cup.

Having been snubbed in the 2021 and 2022 editions in lieu of giving a chance to younger talent, this Proteas legend still has a lot of gas left in him and what’s better than showing it in the IPL.

After all , du Plessis still is still making the bat talk, mounting 369 runs in 10 innings at the recently concluded SA20, en route to being the second highest run scorer.

The captain and the opening batter of RCB, Faf has motivation galore to win a maiden IPL title for the Bengaluru side along with showing the South African selection committee he is worthy of a Protea comeback.

Apart from the aforementioned talent, South Africa will havea plethora of other stars, the likes of Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klassen, David Miller, Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Rilee Rossouw who would also aim to make this tournament one to remember personally and a for a national cause.

So, with an abundance of Protea talent on show, every South African faithful including me would hope for the IPL 2024 to sparkle with their illumination galore!
