Cricket is among the most beloved sports in Jamaica, and the island has a reputation for producing exceptional bowlers over the years. However, there is an exception in young Brandon King, a stylish batsman who can challenge bowlers on his best days. There is elegance in his batting, the penchant for playing square on the off side there for all to see.

The young man, who began his career as a middle-order batter for Jamaica, made a significant impact during the 2019 CPL, where he showcased his power-hitting abilities as an opener. This ultimately lead to his selection in the West Indies’ white-ball team.

He made his debut against Afghanistan in India in 2019. While he didn’t perform exceptionally well to be considered a standout in his debut series, he did showcase glimpses of his talent. That convinced the selectors that Brandon King would be a valuable asset for the West Indies over time.

However, five years on since his one day debut and after some 37 ODI’s, Brandon King’s name rests against an average that is just a touch above 30.

It is 30.11, to be precise.

Must it be asked, does it really does justice to his talent?

So the question that must be asked is that despite playing the sport’s one day format, not that he’s a pushover in Cricket’s briefest template, what is holding Brandon King back from becoming a reliable performer?

Anyone who saw his maiden one day century that came in 2023 would see King’s effortless ability to combine elegance and power. He doesn’t seem to overhit it, even when applying full power and yet, the white ball travels quite a mile.

Not working enough on fitness?

What ought to be noted is that the game of cricket has undergone a transformation regarding the fitness levels required of players. The era when selection was solely based on cricketing skills is over; now, players must be physically robust enough to endure the intense heat and humidity.

What Brandon King is facing now is absence from the game he loves, one he’s good at on account of injuries. The fan who still holds elegance and timing over blind hitting and power would have missed seeing the Jamaican in action against the Proteas as seen recently.

Moreover, Injuries can impede the progress of a batsman or bowler, as recovering from an injury requires beginning again, which can create additional pressure. So, perhaps somewhere it makes sense to contend with the fact that Brandon King will face a challenging task when he returns to the field.

And needless to say, the die hard Caribbean supporter will want that to happen now, sooner than any later.

Sticking only to the shorter format of the game

T20 cricket has undoubtedly given a much-needed boost to the Caribbean people, who have been feeling down due to the decline of their cricket.

However, it has also led to a negative consequence: the current generation’s disinterest in playing the ultimate format of the game, which is Test cricket.

Resultantly, players are not adequately prepared to handle the demands of this longer format.

Brandon King, and it’s rather interesting actually, is yet to play Test cricket, which might explain why, despite his considerable batting talent, his transformation into becoming a truly great player will continue to be hindered for as long as he stays off the white shirt with the West Indies logo.

Not that he himself is avoiding playing five day cricket, one just doesn’t know what the matter is.

Have the honourable selectors approached him as yet for a proper Test match role or has there been resistance from King’s end himself? There is no clarity whatsoever apart from one thing and it’s that Brandon King’s talent warrants him a place in Test cricket.

Lacking sufficient mental strength

Brandon King’s statistics are mediocre, especially considering that he has played 143 T20 Internationals and averages only 29.

This does not bode well for his reputation as a consistent T20 batsman, indicating that he is not performing reliably enough to be regarded as a future leader or key player for his team. Inconsistency may stem from a deficiency in mental resilience to cope with the weight of high expectations.

Players of Brandon King’s calibre are expected to deliver runs reliably. So if he is not achieving this, it indicates that there may be underlying issues related to the mental side of the game.

Recurring injuries can Jeopardise Career

King experienced a minor injury during the West Indies’ match against England in the recently finished T20 World Cup and was sidelined from the tournament because of a side strain. Such injuries could pose further issues for him if he does not focus on his fitness, as they hinder his development as a batsman.

It is crucial for the young player to prioritise his fitness to enhance his overall game and skills.

It’s challenging to be a Lara or a Richard, but we can certainly learn from their careers and the legacy they left for the younger generation. It’s now up to individuals like King, Mayers, and Shamar to take inspiration from the Caribbean’s past heroes.
